Gender differences when voting for a political party

Gender differences when voting for a political party

Women are as likely to vote as men are,
at least in most countries, there are country level differences, but in general
we see that women are as likely to vote as men including in the UK, but there are
significant gender differences in other types of participation. For example
we see gender differences with men in general being more likely to participate,
like in protests, in being member of a political party, etc. We do also see
types of participation where women are more likely to engage; like they are
more likely to sign petitions, some other private types of engagements,
which are also often more easy to incorporate in daily life. So we also see
in Parliament gender differences, whereas you can see for example that
when women get elected they do in parliamentary committees, they
are member of different committees than men are, so there are parliamentary
committees that we did research on in Germany where you see that women are
over represented on committees like family issues, education; so what are
generally seen as more feminine issues, also generally seen as less prestigious,
less powerful committees. Whereas men are more likely to be represented on what is
seen as the masculine issues, or committees handling those issues, often
also seen as more powerful committees like economics, finance, defense, etc. and
that is important because we do see differences in the power, differences in
prestige, between those different committees with women generally being
over-represented on committees that are generally seen as less powerful, less
prestigious etc. so it is really important to be aware of those gender
differences. And of course one can say maybe women just prefer being members of
those committees, and it is possible but it’s still important to be aware of it,
because we do see those differences in prestige and also the difference in
influence that women and men will have in policymaking.
