Maroondah City Council Youth Services

(Music) So Maroondah Council offers a range of
services for young people within the community. Aside from the direct service
work that the Youth Services team do, Maroondah Council acts as a pathway and a connection for young people to get where they need to go within the community. There is opportunities for everyone here. From art, to music, to production and
everything else in-between. Community services, yeah it’s really nice.
It’s a good environment. I think Council is really welcoming and
approachable as all the staff are really friendly and always have time to listen
and hear your ideas, and work with you to develop those as well. They always give up time to make sure you’re alright and always want to hear your input, your
voice, so they can learn and just do better in any kind of way that they can. Some of my favourite things to do in Maroondah are go to all the restaurants and
cafes. We have so much here, and it’s amazing. I also like to use the the library, it
sounds a bit dorky (laughs), but I find it a really good space to go and study if I need to,
or just get a few things done in an environment that has a lot of resources
and they’re accessible. One of my favourite things to do in Maroondah is go out
in the parks, the skate parks. They’re really fun and nice. I get to meet a
lot of people there. The most valuable thing I’ve learned working with Maroondah Council is that I’m valid. Everything I say, every opinion I have is valid. It doesn’t matter how old I am, or what I look like. Council has supported me in knowing that I have my own back. but also, if I need help that I can go to youth workers, and just talk to them blatantly and honestly about what I’m going through. I think it’s really great that I’ve been
given an opportunity to like express myself through my art. it’s given me the
experiences and all the necessary platforms that I need to get into the fields that I want to get into. So, it really helped for my future. Youth Services has a strong focus on community leadership, and we really enjoy having the opportunity to empower young people to be leaders in their own right. We help young people to uncover their strengths and their superpowers, and to use this to become leaders in their own lives. One year I was awarded a
Resiliency Award for keeping my head held high. That was a real breath of
fresh air for me, because I haven’t really been rewarded with something like that. We support young people to be as healthy as they possibly can, both through their mental health and their physical health, and linking them through programs within the wider community as well to help do that. One of my favourite Council
facilities is Aquanation, which has the pool and gym. I’ve used it quite a bit, I
think it’s great to have such high tech and brand new facilities in our area
that people of all ages can use. What brings me back to Youth Services all the time, it just feels like home. Every part, everywhere I look in this area is somewhere where I have a good memory. I love working with young people because
it gives me an opportunity to work with a generation whose voices are so often
not heard and they deserve that opportunity. Working with Council gives me the platform to advocate for young people, advocate for their needs, and
support them to be the best version of themselves.
