Political parties have mixed reactions to court’s arrest warrant decision

The reactions from the nation’s political
parties were mixed… in the wake of the court’s decision on the arrest warrant for arguably
the most powerful business figure in the nation. Park Ji-won has the latest from parliament. The ruling Saenuri Party said Thursday…
it respects the court’s decision. It plans to reflect on the ongoing crisis
and urge businesses to change their ways. “We respect the court’s decision. We hope the independent counsel will get to
the bottom of the case to root out the truth,… including any collusive links between politicians
and business leaders.” The Righteous Party,… which comprises roughly
30 former Saenuri lawmakers who were part of the faction that didn’t support President
Park,… said that while it respects the court’s decision,… it’s doesn’t represent a pardon
for Samsung’s heir apparent Lee Jae-yong… and urged investigators to continue their
work. The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea
was critical of the court,… saying the judicial branch was ignoring the public’s desire for
justice. The party also urged the independent counsel…
to bring all suspects to trial. “The dismissal of the request for the arrest
warrant is not equivalent to an acquittal… and yet the court is turning a blind eye to
the public’s desire for justice, the elimination of corruption and the collusive links between
politicians and business. It is very regrettable.” The minor opposition People’s Party called
an emergency general meeting of all its lawmakers Thursday morning… to discuss the matter. “Our party has already expressed our criticism
of the court’s decision through our regular morning meeting and briefing,… and although
we respect the court,… we are all still in shock about the decision.” “While the parties’ reactions to the decision
have varied,…. they’ve all shown support for the independent counsel’s efforts to get
to the bottom of the case. Park Ji-won, Arirang News.”
