The full speech that RM of BTS gave at the United Nations

-Thank you, Mr.
Secretary-General, UNICEF executive director, and all the excellencies
and distinguished guests from all across the world. My name is Kim Nam-joon,
also known as RM, the leader of the group BTS. It is an incredible honor
to be invited to an occasion with such significance
for today’s young generation. Last November, BTS launched
the Love Myself campaign with UNICEF, built on our belief
that true love first begins with loving myself. We’ve been partnering with
UNICEF’s End Violence program to protect children
and young people all over the world
from violence. And our fans have become
a major part of this campaign with their action
and with their enthusiasm. We truly have the best fans
in the world. And I’d like to begin
by talking about myself. I was born in Ilsan,
a city near Seoul, South Korea. It is a really beautiful place
with a lake, hills, and even
an annual flower festival. I spent a very happy
childhood there, and I was just an ordinary boy. I used to look up
at the night sky and wonder, and I used to dream
the dreams of a boy. I used to imagine that I was
a superhero who could save the world. In an intro to one
of our early albums, there’s a line that says, “My heart stopped when I was
maybe nine or ten.” Looking back, I think that’s
when I began to worry about what other people
thought of me and started seeing myself
through their eyes. I stopped looking up
at the night skies, the stars. I stopped daydreaming. Instead, I just tried
to jam myself into the molds
that other people made. Soon, I began to shut out
my own voice and started to listen
to the voices of others. No one called out my name,
and neither did I. My heart stopped,
and my eyes closed shut. So, like this, I, we,
all lost our names. We became like ghosts. But I had one sensory,
and that was music. There was a small voice
inside of me that said, “Wake up, man,
and listen to yourself.” But it took me a long time to
hear music calling my real name. Even after making the decision
to join BTS, there were a lot of hurdles. Some people might not believe, but most people thought
we were hopeless. And sometimes
I just wanted to quit. But I think I was very lucky
that I didn’t give it all up. And I’m sure that I, and we,
will keep stumbling and falling like this. BTS has become artists performing in those
huge stadiums and selling millions
of albums right now, but I am still
an ordinary 24-year-old guy. If there’s anything that
I achieved, it was only possible that I have my other BTS members
right by my side and because of the love
and support that our ARMY fans
all over the world make for us. And maybe I made a mistake
yesterday, but yesterday’s me is still me. Today, I am who I am with all
of my faults and my mistakes. Tomorrow, I might be a tiny bit
wiser, and that’ll be me, too. These faults and mistakes
are what I am, making up the brightest stars
in the constellation of my life. I have come to love myself
for who I am, for who I was, and for who I hope to become. I’d like to say one last thing. After releasing our
“Love Yourself” albums and launching
the “Love Myself” campaign, we started to hear
remarkable stories from our fans
all over the world, how our message helped them
overcome their hardships in life and start loving themselves. Those stories constantly remind
us of our responsibility. So, let’s take all one
more step. We have learned
to love ourselves, so now I urge you
to speak yourself. I’d like to ask all of you,
“What is your name? What excites you
and makes your heart beat? Tell me your story. I want to hear your voice, and I
want to hear your conviction. No matter who you are,
where you’re from, your skin color, your gender
identity, just speak yourself. Find your name and find your
voice by speaking yourself.” I’m Kim Nam-joon
and also RM of BTS. I am an idol, and I am an artist
from a small town in Korea. Like most people, I’ve made many
and plenty mistakes in my life. I have many faults,
and I have many more fears, but I’m going to embrace myself
as hard as I can, and I’m starting to love myself
gradually, just little by little. What is your name? Speak yourself. Thank you very much. -Thank you very much. With so many young fans
around the world, it was a pleasure having
BTS with us, and I’m thankful that you use
your platform and creativity to reach young audiences
with positive messages about what it means to be
a young person in the world today.

  1. what a gut
………. i mean are there anyone who capable to do such a speech infront of these people? at the age 24? im proud that many Korean are the true genius out of the whole asia region,

I really don't UNDERSTAND WHY LOOKS MATTER, THATS A REASON I DONT LIKE MYSELF BUT I'M TRYING TO LEARN HOW TO. I'M AN 11 YEAR OLD GIRL THATS HALF BLACK AND THE OTHER HALF SHARING WHITE AND A TINT OF INDIAN AND I GET BULLIED FOR MY LOOKS, BECAUSE I LIKE KPOP AND BECAUSE IM LEARNING KOREAN AND I WANNA BE LIKE BTS SOMEDAY BUT PEOPLE SAY "You can't be a Kpop rapper because you're not KOREAN "… But I dont let that stop me from showing love to BTS, and making my way to achieve my dream. I've been with them since 2015 and I wish I could meet them, but I'm poor.

I don't UNDERSTAND why people say RM is ugly or this member is ugly because lemme tell you something whenever I hear that I say " HE'S BETTER LOOKING THAN YOU SO SHUT YOUR UGLY HEAD UP "

I wish people would stop hating and saying unnecessary things

(Just for any clear ups Im an ARMY and what I mean by so called ARMYS is ARMYS that SAY and THINK they are an ARMY even tho they only show love to 1 or 2 members and not the whole group)

    Thank you for reading

  3. I’m sorry but in the beginning of the video does anybody see they type
β€œKim (RM) namjoon LEAD SINGER”. I knew namjoon was a singer and now I got proof

  4. If you ask me,I could not remember anything happens when I was 9 or 10🀣🀣🀣.Such a sharp guy.

  5. If only the others had their earpieces on to have heard the speech in Korean πŸ˜•. Hopefully they understood some of it.

  6. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! 7. About 5 month after I became a BTS army this came out. At about the time I became an army my mental staute was terribly low and they lifted me up when I listened to them. My arm has been scared and ruined from that time but because of BTS my life was not only my memory. It has been a year since then and I am happy to say I have started loving myself which is hard to sat say considering I am 14 years old. Today however I have been kinda low and anxious due to certain things that also include my worrys about starting highschool, however I refound this speech again and it brought me close to tears. Considering its hard for me to cry this was kinda shocking but I think I will be ok now thanks to BTS and all they have done to help me even if they have no idea they did anything to effect my life. I hope they all are in good health and I promise to continue to watch them and support thrm as they grow no matter what. I owe them my life and I am sure other army's do as well. Thank you kim namjoon, kim seokjin, min yoongi, jung hoseok, park jimin, kim taehyung, and jeon jungkook

  8. So much respect for RM and the rest of the members πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘this is incredible I should’ve watched this sooner

  9. "No matter who you are, where you from, your skin color, your gender identity, just speak yourself."

–that makes me cry, thats why i really love BTS😭

  11. The thing I see most people get triggered about in this speech is that he calls himself an idol.
He doesn't mean idol like something that people worship.
    He means it as the second meaning;

"a person or thing that is greatly admired, loved, or revered."

    There you go

  12. I literally cried hearing his speech its amazing omg I love bts they sound like angels and they are

  13. κœ±α΄œΙ’α΄€'ꜱ Κ™α΄‡α΄€α΄œα΄›Ιͺꜰᴜʟ κœ°α΄€α΄„α΄‡α΄œ says:

I know this is from 9months ago but If there was no RM no Jin no Suga no J hope no Jimin no V no Jungkook there wouldn't be no BTS

  14. I am crying BTS have been so helpful for me when i lost my grandfather. My grandfather was my best friend and we would sit on the porch swing together and every day i go and i sit on the porch swing and lessen to music all day long. After he died i had some trouble with getting to sleep going to school i cried every night but i would think of BTS and cheer up knowing that they all have lost someone but they love themselves for who they are,but for me that was hard i have ADHD and server dyslexia and have been made of it,but they thought me to love myself for who i am. I LOVE this fandom because it's not just a fandom but a family every ARMY i have meet was there for me and i was there for them.πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

  15. i was a kid in the 90s in korea. the culture then was this ; korea was just merging out of cheap manufacturing, samsung was nothing more than a tv appliance, hyundais were cars you bought cos you couldnt afford a toyota, and kpop was so horrendously embarrassing I never in a million years thought that kpop would ever sell outside korea. my parents generation had lived through a military coup – young college students killed by the dictatorship and democratic freedoms were just recently beginning to take hold.
My grandparents generation was even worse – the Japanese occupation had driven them out of their homes and farms and they were forced to relocate into nowhere. The war tore them apart and some of my extended family still havent seen their siblings in 70 years. They may pass away before even getting to see each other face to face.
And out of the ashes, something to eat. Out of the eaten, something sweet…. who you are is not defined by what, where and when. its all by how much love you choose to embrace, especially upon yourself.
And I truly see it the results.
May you all rise before the Sun goes down.

  16. I know that as everybody loves BTS I am obviously going to get shouted at. But something people don't seem to realize is that it wouldn't be surprising if he hadn't written this speech. I don't know BTS (and I honestly don't want to) but in the music industry, these people are often muppets controlled by managers. So I personally don't believe he wrote this speech. Someone probably wrote it for him, and he learnt it by heart, which could explain why there isn't a single mistake. Just wanted you to think and not just admit that if he pronounced the speech he is the one who wrote it. Thanks

  17. people are hating on rm for saying the intro line to the ly album because it’s a β€œself-promo”LIKE WHATTT LISTEN TO THE SPEECH…. WHAT HE SAID ABOUT THE ALBUM MADE SENCE WITH THE SPEECHπŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ dude you’re just mad because your favs CANT BE LIKE HIM!!! HE IS SMART AND GRATEFUL AND HUMBLE HE IS THE REASON KOOKIE JOINED BTS! HE IS LITERALLY THE GLUE OF BTS SO DONT HATE ON HIM FOR BEING AN INSPIRATION TO YOUNG AND EVEN OLDER PEOPLE. stop hating on him please joon is literally our everything …. I PURPLE YOU NAMJOON AND ARMYπŸ’œπŸŒˆ

  18. i cried. i watched this while studying as i am crying, my mom heard me and said i was crazy i told her the reason and she still called me crazy. that’s not the point, my point is that rm’s words hit me very hard

  19. Can you guys imagine namjoon going
"What is your name? Speak yoursel. Periodttt."i

that speech was so powerful πŸ’œ

  20. Am I the only one that smiled when Namjoon said "We truly have the best fans in the world." And then his smile after that… πŸ˜πŸ’œ

  21. Rm: giving a speach in English
    J-hope: nodding
    V(i luv him😊❀): smiling
In theyre minds: whut are u saying bro?!

  22. Rm just like everyone else only he took his talent and made it special to the world…
He didn't waste his life away… he is a real role model for me.

  23. We had to watch this in my History class, and they had a girl crying πŸ™
the teacher asked her why, and she said
"I don't know who this man is, but his words reached my heart, and I feel like it's beating just a little stronger than before"

  24. He is a ordinary 24 year old that has about millions of girlfriends, boyfriends, wife’s and husbands

  25. Bro I felt like he was talking to me. Like when he was saying β€œWhat’s your name? Speak yourself..” I got emotional as heck. I have depression and anxiety and when I have a bad day I swear I put in BTS right away and I feel more calm and happy

  26. This really moved my heart,
Kim Namjoon…I allow you, to use me…
to help love yourself even more…
    because you, Kim Namjoon
Have helped me to love myself

  27. i sometimes come back to this video to remind myself that i am worth it and that i deserve self love. i forget that sometimes but best believe BTS is always there for me to over come those times

  28. I don’t even listen to BTS but I can agree that their efforts to change the world for better are amazing and more artists should attempt to make the same efforts as this.

  29. Damn Namjoon this was so powerful. Love you by the way! You did an amazing job. AMAZING ENGLISH TOO πŸ’–β™‘πŸ˜©πŸ˜πŸ₯°πŸ‘

  30. I would like to say something thats very important about this speech
first thing is wow that speech was the best speech i have heard in my life and second thank you bts and army's for everything
bts was the first k pop band i every listened to and in that time of getting into bts i was able to love myself and understand myself and i would trade nothing for that bts is truly an amazing band and they have changed lives and are still changing lives
they gave me hope when i needed it most and i new i was loved i hope that people understand that bts is not just a kpop band who sings/rap they are 7 amazing guys who speak themselves and gave people ho[e and love etc
i just thought i might say that and put that out for the world
so thank you to all Armys and bts for leading on the right path
thank you for joining my ted talk (lol)

  31. I cried so much during this 😭 it means a lot to me…bts helped me so much…sorry that you had to read this

  32. As a 12 year old with a chronic condition that will on average cause me to die 12-20 years earlier than other people. I have to wear medical devices for my whole life and every second of every day is filled with reminders of my condition. This inspired me to follow my dreams of being a doctor, and helping other people with my condition.

  33. I felt that!

That feeling that u get when someone say something nice….was that feeling I have when rm spoken….LOVE URSELFπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ˜

  34. Honestly after watching this I just want to say thank you to RM and to BTS for not giving and for keeping on fighting to do what they love because if they hadn’t thousands of army’s wouldn’t have been inspired or been encouraged to keep fighting!

  35. I showed this to my teacher because we were going to do speeches. After watching it, he said that "That was a really good speech! The message was really good, and he's a very powerful speaker and really convincing." and I was so happy afterwards fhgjshgjdhgdfhdfjfhd also he asked who Namjoon was, so I told my teacher and he complimented him (Namjoon) again.
